In 2000, JGTC rules were changed to disallow ABS, and restricting ground effects. This led to an overall drop in the performance of the race cars. As a countermeasure, CERUMO decided to focus on increasing the handling and made the strategic choice to employ a softer compound tire than its rivals. At the same time, special attention was paid to the weight penalty system. In the JGTC, top finishers are "penalized" with extra weight for the remaining races, this is done to even the playing field. Armed with its exceptional handling, the au CERUMO Supra could have won several races right off the bat.
