History:
"The 2-door coupe that fought in the WRC as the first Impreza WR car."

The Impreza World Rally Car, created by Subaru under the WRC's new vehicle category in 1997, impressed all who saw its 2-door body that featured enlarged fenders and sophisticated aerodynamic design. The car demonstrated remarkable success right out of the gates, taking three straight victories between the season opener in Monte Carlo and at the Safari Rally in the third round. It then won the 6th and 9th rounds before wrapping up the season winning three straight races. The Subaru was the cream of the crop in its first year.

Things weren't so rosy for Subaru the following year as rival teams improved their machines in response to the Impreza. As a result, Subaru made improvements to its car by installing a fly-by-wire electronically-controlled semi-automatic throttle system. The driver lineup also changed, making Richard Burns and Juha Kankkunen the main pilots.

While the first part of the 1999 season was less than spectacular, the Impreza started getting its groove in the middle of the season. It won its first race in Round 7 at Argentina and then won four times after that, including three 1-2 finishes. In the end, it placed 2nd in the Constructor's Championship.

The Impreza underwent major changed the following year, but when the dust had cleared at the end of the 2000 season, it wasn't enough to win the Championship, losing to Peugeot by a narrow margin.
