History:
Based on the sultry - looking Le Mans Quattro concept car presented
at the 2003 Frankfurt Motor Show, the road-going version of this sleek
prototype, the Audi R8, made its debut at the Paris Auto Show in 2006.

And thought the R8 was rolled out with a V-8 initially, there were rumors
from the start that it would see a larger engine made available someday,
since the engine compartment had plenty of room to spare. This theory bore
itself out when a concept car powered by a 12-cylinder diesel appeared at
the 2008 Detroit Auto Show, then again in 2009 when a 5.2-liter V-10 model,
the 5.2 FSI Quattro, entered production.

The new V-10 produced 518 HP at 8000 rpm and 390.5ft-lb of torque,
and was capable of running from 0-100km/h(62mph) in 3.9 seconds,
versus a time of 4.6 seconds for the V-8-powered 4.2 FSI Quattro.

But Audi wasn't finished with the R8 yet: In the fall of 2008, the company
announced that it would make available a GT3-class competition version,
dubbed the R8 LMS, available to privateer racing teams. The new car
was successful from the start - Audi entered four cars in the difficult
24 Hours of Nurburgring; not only did all four finish but one car won the GT3
class and finished second overall. Look for more success by the sleek sports
car, both on and off the track, in the future.
